In Cuba, the processions of the Virgin of Regla and the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre symbolize a fusion of Catholic faith and Yoruba religion, reflecting the island's unique syncretism. The Virgin of Regla, celebrated on September 7, is associated with Yemayá, goddess of the sea and protector of fishermen.
The Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, patroness of Cuba and venerated on September 8, is syncretized with Ochún, orisha of love and rivers. During her procession, the faithful wear yellow and present offerings of honey and sunflowers.
Both celebrations represent Cuba's religious syncretism, where Catholic faith blends with African beliefs, preserving a rich cultural heritage that strengthens Cuban identity and spirituality. These festivities are reflected in the photographic series I present, in which my intention was to highlight the Cuban community that gathers each year for these processions.
