Jones & Ellis Street is a photographic exploration of resilience, connection, and dignity within San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Over the course of a year, I immersed myself in this community, capturing the daily lives and powerful stories of its residents. Recently, San Francisco has faced a rise in violence, the shutdown of retail spaces, and a widespread narrative of a city in decline. The Tenderloin, often depicted through the lens of homelessness, addiction, and hardship, has been at the center of this portrayal, reinforcing a sense of doom and gloom that overshadows the people who live there.
My goal with this project is not to ignore the challenges but to reveal the beauty, hope, and unity that continue to flourish in these difficult circumstances. Through large-scale, wheat-pasted black-and-white images, I aim to elevate the individuals of the Tenderloin, making them larger than life. By placing these portraits on street corners and walls, I invite viewers to see these people from a new perspective, challenging them to look up to rather than down on those often marginalized by society.
