Bronze Medal in the category Β« Street Winter (Rain, Snow...) Β»
In 2020/2021 the winter in Berlin was harsh with freezing temperatures, lots of snow, curfews and Corona contact restrictions β¦
These were the general conditions when I set out with my analogue 35mm camera in January/February 2021 to capture the atmosphere in Berlin at night: Emptiness and abandonment. Not a soul. A city at a standstill. Pure melancholy. The residents had holed up in their own four walls, be it because of the inhospitable weather conditions or in fear of the rampant virus.
The pictures show completely deserted places; Advertising screens that broadcast their advertising messages into a cold snowy landscape. But there are also subtle clues to the reason for this emptiness. You had to face the Corona winter whether you wanted to or not. Life in Berlin continued, but more slowly, decelerated, so to speak.
So, these images document a drastic event for the city and its people. They show Berlin from a completely different perspective: cold, unwelcoming, somehow scary - almost like in a 'Film Noir'.
