These seven photographs capture one of my favorite scenes in Brookfield Place, NYC’s Financial District. As the workday ends, businesspeople hurry to catch the subway or meet friends, moving in waves as the elevator brings them down. The warm light of the setting sun casts their shadows on the walls and reflects off the polished floors, creating dynamic patterns of light and dark. Shadows and reflections track their subjects, choreographing a sense of order amid the hustle and bustle. The resulting symmetry and patterns bring structure to the chaotic scene. This phenomenon occurs only in winter, late afternoons when the sun is at the perfect angle. These images are a selection from three winters of photographing this unique interplay of light and movement.
