Tulip fever or Tulip mania (Dutch: ‘tulpenkoorts’ or ‘tulpenmanie’) refers to a period during the Dutch Golden Age when contract prices for fashionable tulip reached extraordinarily high levels. It resulted in a dramatic economic collapse in the 17th century and the term "tulip mania" is now often used metaphorically to refer to any large economic bubble.
Tulips are still an important part of Dutch culture and economy and maybe have an even stronger symbolic value for the country in general.
So, when the tulip season kicks off in January every year, in the heart of Amsterdam, for a brief moment Tulip fever is among us again with people fighting for a place to get their own share of colorful flowers…
