Honorable Mention in the category « Street Night Shot »
Mack the Knife, the most famous song in Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera, depicts the struggle between different criminal gangs in the poor districts of London, where the horrors of the Great War, widespread misery and precariousness, and mentally and physically broken victims were still omnipresent. It features prostitutes, immigrants and the homeless without obviously sparing the decadent bourgeoisie of the time from social criticism. These lines had been added to the song later, for the film version, which were never repeated in the versions known today:
There are some who are in darkness
And the others are in light
And you see the ones in brightness
Those in darkness drop from sight.
With my photography, I modestly try to shed light on those in the shadows. The pictures are part of an ongoing project, including night shots of London (where the Opera is set, Berlin (where it was written) and Lausanne (where I live).
