For whole weeks at a time during the county fair season in Upstate New York, the 4-H kids live with animals they’ve raised from birth in barns on the fairgrounds, preparing for shows and auctions.For the last several years, I have been photographing in the barns to document the kids’ rapport and intimacy with these animals and to celebrate the grit and perseverance that comes of caring for livestock that they will proudly auction in a few days to farmers and butchers alike.
